My Heart Belongs to Mumbai

I’ve lived in many cities across India, but there’s one that always pulls me back, no matter where life takes me and it’s Mumbai, The City of Dreams. Call it what you want, but for me, it’s more than a destination, It’s an emotion.

I’ve lived here for years, and even now, I find myself returning often. Mumbai isn’t just a place you visit, you live it, breathe it, and somehow, it becomes a part of your DNA. It’s a city where ambition walks hand in hand with struggle, where skyscrapers rise beside slums, and where you can feel the pulse of life in every corner. It’s where no one sleeps hungry, and no one stops dreaming.

This city has a unique energy that fuels your spirit. Whether you’re here to chase a corporate career, launch your own startup, to become an actor, or simply get inspired, Mumbai welcomes you with open arms. It’s the kind of place where you grind through the weekdays with relentless hustle, and then lose yourself in the charm of the weekends, be it a 6 AM jog along Marine Drive or a 2 AM in a night club or vada pav run near CST.

And don’t even get me started on the food and shopping. From street food stalls that serve soul-hugging meals to family-run eateries that have been around for generations, to celebrity chef-led fine dining spots that redefine indulgence, Mumbai is a culinary powerhouse. Same with shopping. Whether you love bargaining in Fashion Street or splurging at luxury boutiques in Bandra or Colaba, this city has it all.

So if you’re planning a trip or just curious about what makes Mumbai tick, buckle up. Let me take you on a deeply personal and practical journey through a city that, for me, will always feel like home.

Why Visit Mumbai?

Mumbai isn’t your typical vacation destination. It’s chaotic, noisy, crowded, but that’s part of its magic. Here’s why I think everyone should experience Mumbai at least once:

  • It’s the city of ambition. You feel it in the air. Whether it’s a rickshaw driver working a double shift to send his kids to school or a 22-year-old pitching his startup at a cafe in Powai, everyone is moving, building, dreaming.
  • The culture is deeply diverse. People from every corner of India live here, bringing with them languages, cuisines, festivals, and stories.
  • It never sleeps. Fancy some chaat at 3 AM? Done. Want to walk at dawn by the sea while the city wakes up? It’s magical.
  • Bollywood lives here. And sometimes, casually walks by you in Bandra or Andheri Lokhandwala.
  • The spirit is unbreakable. This city has survived floods, terror attacks, and countless other hardships. But its people always bounce back.

What to See & Do in Mumbai

1. Gateway of India & Colaba Causeway

Start with the classics. The Gateway of India isn’t just a photo stop. It’s history, elegance, and chaos rolled into one. Grab a cutting chai nearby, watch the boats sail, and then head to Colaba Causeway for some street shopping and nostalgia.

2. Marine Drive & Girgaon Chowpatty

If you want to understand why Mumbai is a romantic city, go to Marine Drive at sunset. The golden light, the sea breeze, and the city lights slowly turning on, it’s pure magic. End your walk at Girgaon Chowpatty with some bhel puri.

3. Bandra Fort & Bandstand

An old Portuguese fort, sea-facing promenades, and the possibility of spotting a celebrity. What’s not to love? Bandra perfectly blends heritage and glam.

4. Dharavi Slum Tour

Not for the faint-hearted, but a life-changing experience. Dharavi is a hub of small-scale industries and creativity. Go with a responsible guide, and you’ll see a side of Mumbai that’s both humbling and inspiring.

5. Haji Ali Dargah & Siddhivinayak Temple

A spiritual detour is always a good idea. Haji Ali, set in the sea, is peaceful and photogenic. Siddhivinayak, always busy, gives you a true sense of Mumbai’s faith.

Where to Stay in Mumbai

Budget:

Try areas like Andheri East or Dadar. These are well-connected by local trains and metros, and you’ll find decent guesthouses and hostels.

Mid-range:

Look around Bandra, Powai, or Lower Parel. Great cafes, cool vibes, and lots of character. Plus, easy access to both the city and airport.

Luxury:

Go south. Colaba, Nariman Point, and Worli are home to sea-facing premium hotels with top-notch service and iconic views.

Wherever you stay, make sure you’re close to a local train or metro station. Trust me, you’ll need it.

Food & Local Culture

This city eats like no one’s watching. And thank God for that.

  • Street food to die for: Vada pav from a stall outside a train station, pav bhaji at Sardar’s near Tardeo, misal pav that could make you cry from the spice, and don’t even talk about bhel puri and sev puri as it give instant craving at any time.
  • Cultural mix: Visit during Ganesh Chaturthi or Janmashtami and see how the city erupts with color, devotion, and celebration. Mumbai respects every religion, and it shows.
  • Old-school eateries: Some family-run Irani cafes serve nostalgia on a plate, keema pav, bun maska, and endless cups of chai.
  • High-end indulgence: Want sushi flown in from Japan or French food that feels like Paris? You’ll find it here.

Mumbai is where food connects people. Conversations start over dabeli and end over kulfi.

Hidden Gems & Offbeat Experiences

  • Banganga Tank in Walkeshwar: A centuries-old water tank surrounded by temples. Peaceful, spiritual, and oddly untouched.
  • Versova Koli Village: Meet the original residents of Mumbai, the fisherfolk. Visit early in the morning for a glimpse into their world.
  • Sewri Flamingo Point: In winter, thousands of flamingos migrate here. It’s surreal.
  • Chor Bazaar: One person’s trash is another’s antique decor dream. Bargain hard and dig deep.

How to Reach Mumbai

  • By Air: Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport connects to major global cities.
  • By Train: Trains to Mumbai are available from almost every Indian city. CST, Bandra Terminus and Mumbai Central are the main stations.
  • By Road: Well-connected highways and bus services make it easy from nearby cities like Pune, Nashik, or Goa.

Once here, use local trains (avoid peak hours), metros, autos, and Uber/Ola for easy travel.

Tips for Travelers

  • Best Time to Visit: November to February. The weather is pleasant, skies are clear, and festivals are in full swing.
  • Budget Tips: Eat like a local, travel by train, and shop in street markets.
  • Safety Advice: Mumbai is generally safe, even at night. But be cautious in crowded areas and always keep your belongings secure.
  • Connectivity and Currency: Get a local SIM, and though UPI, credit card and debit card are widely accepted still always carry cash especially change.

Final Thoughts

Mumbai is a city that teaches you something new every single day. It teaches you to dream big, to stay grounded, to move fast, and to take a moment to enjoy the breeze by the sea.

It’s not perfect. It’s crowded, chaotic, and sometimes overwhelming. But it’s also resilient, kind, and full of surprises. It’s a city that never gives up, and somehow, neither do you when you’re in it.
