Born to Roam, but Rooted in Calgary
Here’s the thing: I didn’t need to book a flight or plan a cross-country trip to get to Calgary—I live here. And let me tell you, calling this city home never feels boring. Calgary has a way of blending urban life with rugged outdoor charm so seamlessly, I sometimes forget just how lucky I am. Most people hear “Calgary” and think: the Stampede, oil, cowboys. And sure, they’re not wrong. But if that’s all you think Calgary has to offer, buckle up. I’m about to show you what it’s really like to experience this city through the eyes of someone who actually lives here. Why Visit Calgary Anyway?
Calgary often gets overshadowed by its more touristy neighbors, Banff and Lake Louise, but that’s what makes it such a hidden gem. It’s the kind of city that surprises you in the best way. You’ll find skyscrapers next to riverside parks, hip brunch spots beside 100-year-old saloons, and mountain views peeking through downtown towers. It’s where prairie meets peak, tradition meets innovation, and yes, where cowboy hats and kombucha coexist. For travelers, it’s a perfect base to explore Alberta. For locals like me, it’s a daily reminder that you don’t need to escape the city to find adventure. The Gateway to Countless Adventures
One of Calgary’s best-kept secrets? It’s a hotspot for day trips and weekend getaways. We’re talking prime location here:-
- To the west: Banff, Canmore, and Lake Louise – some of the most iconic and breathtaking spots in the Canadian Rockies are just 1.5 to 2 hours away.
-
- To the east: Drumheller and the badlands offer a completely different landscape with hoodoos, dinosaur fossils, and stunning canyons.
-
- To the north: Sylvan Lake (perfect for summer fun) and Edmonton (for festivals, West Edmonton Mall, and more) are both a few hours’ drive.
-
- To the south: Waterton Lakes National Park, nestled right on the US border, is a quieter but equally majestic cousin to Banff.
What to See & Do in Calgary
1. Wander Through the Downtown Core
Downtown Calgary is more than business suits and office towers. It’s got the Calgary Tower (yes, you can stand on the glass floor), the new Central Library (an architectural masterpiece), and Stephen Avenue—a pedestrian street lined with restaurants, shops, and patios perfect for people-watching. Pro tip: Grab a coffee and just stroll. The vibe is different every day.2. Explore the Beltline and 17th Ave
This area is like Calgary’s version of a cultural hotpot. Trendy cafes, indie boutiques, rooftop patios, craft breweries—you name it. I love coming here on weekends to meet friends for brunch or just walk around and see what’s new.3. Take a Riverside Walk in Prince’s Island Park
Right in the heart of the city, this park is my go-to escape when I want nature without leaving town. The Bow River trails are perfect for walking, biking, or rollerblading (yes, I still do that). And in the summer? Picnics, festivals, and live music.4. Visit the Calgary Zoo or TELUS Spark Science Centre
Especially great if you’ve got kids or are just a curious soul. The Zoo is world-class (don’t miss the Penguin Plunge!), and TELUS Spark has rotating exhibits that even adults find fascinating.5. Check Out Local Markets
The Calgary Farmers’ Market and Crossroads Market are weekend staples. I go for fresh produce, local cheese, artisan everything, and honestly just the vibes.Where to Stay (If You’re Visiting)
Okay, so I live here—but I still get asked by friends visiting where to stay. Here’s what I usually recommend: Luxury: Hotel Arts or Fairmont Palliser – Central, classy, and perfect if you want to treat yourself. Mid-range: Alt Hotel Calgary East Village – Super modern and walking distance to basically everything cool. Budget-Friendly: Wicked Hostels or HI Calgary City Centre – Great for travelers who want to meet people and save money. Or hey, if you’re road-tripping with an RV, there are campgrounds just outside the city too!Food & Local Culture
I’m gonna be honest: Calgary’s food scene slaps. It’s way more diverse and exciting than most people expect. What You Have to Try:-
- Alberta beef steak (obviously)
-
- Ginger beef (fun fact: it was invented here!)
-
- Bison burgers
-
- Craft beer (so. many. breweries.)
-
- Brunch at OEB or Monki
Hidden Gems & Local Secrets
1. Reader Rock Garden
It’s peaceful, historic, and full of flowers in spring and summer. Not a lot of tourists make it here, and I kind of love that.2. Inglewood & East Village
These are two of my favorite neighborhoods. Inglewood is old-school cool—antique shops, jazz bars, and one of the best record stores ever. East Village is all modern, artsy, and riverfront cool.3. Calgary’s Public Art Scene
From murals to sculptures to art installations under bridges, this city is full of surprises if you look up (or down). How to Get to Calgary
If you’re coming from out of town:-
- By Air: Calgary International Airport (YYC) is super well-connected. About 20 minutes from downtown.
-
- By Car: A popular stop on a Canadian Rockies road trip, especially if you’re heading to Banff or Jasper next.
-
- By Bus or Train: Red Arrow, Rider Express, and VIA Rail serve the city.
