The First Time I Fell for a Mountain (Literally)
Let me take you back to a moment that perfectly sums up my trip to Banff.
It was my second day there, and I was standing on a frozen lake, Lake Louise, the kind of place you see on postcards and assume must be Photoshopped. Snowflakes were drifting lazily from the sky, and the whole world looked like it had been dipped in powdered sugar. I turned to take a selfie with the mountains in the background, promptly tripped over my own snowshoe, and face planted into a snowbank. Not exactly the majestic, explorer-in-the-wild vibe I was going for. But you know what? It was hilarious. And that’s Banff for you—jaw-droppingly beautiful, a little unpredictable, and the kind of place that makes you feel wonderfully small in the best possible way.
So if you’ve ever dreamt of pristine alpine lakes, dramatic peaks, hot springs, wildlife encounters, and the kind of fresh air that makes your lungs feel like they’re being hugged, Banff might just be your soulmate.
Confused about whether to visit Banff in summer or winter? Here’s a breakdown of the differences to help you decide—check out my Banff blog for all the details!
Why Visit Banff National Park?
Let’s be honest: Canada has no shortage of stunning landscapes, but Banff is on a whole different level.
First of all, it’s Canada’s first national park, and one of the most iconic in the world. Nestled in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains, Banff is like nature’s version of a Beyoncé concert, epic, dazzling, and worth every penny.
What makes Banff truly special is the combo platter of experiences it serves up. One moment you’re canoeing on emerald lakes, the next you’re soaking in a hot spring, then suddenly there’s a family of elk casually crossing the road like they own the place (spoiler alert: they kinda do).
But beyond the views, which, yes, are next-level gorgeous, Banff gave me something deeper: clarity, perspective, and the rare feeling of being completely unplugged in a world that’s always “on.”
Also, one of the most magical things about Banff is how completely different it feels between seasons. In winter, the entire area transforms into a snowy wonderland, Lake Louise freezes over and becomes a hub for ice skating, skiing, and even ice sculpture displays. The mountains look like they’ve been dusted with powdered sugar, and the vibe is straight out of a snow globe.

In summer, everything shifts, the ice melts, revealing turquoise blue lakes, lush greenery, and wildflowers. It’s like visiting two completely different destinations. If you can, visit both in summer and winter, you won’t believe it’s the same place.

What to See & Do in Banff (AKA: Where I Lost My Chill… in the Best Way)
Lake Louise: The Supermodel of Lakes
No exaggeration, Lake Louise looks like someone Photoshopped a dream. I got there early (like, painfully early) to beat the crowds, and wow, was it worth it. The water is this unreal shade of turquoise in summer, and in winter, it turns into a frozen playground for ice skating and snowshoeing.

Pro tip: Rent a canoe if you’re visiting in warmer months. Yes, it’s a bit pricey, but paddling across that glacial lake was one of the most peaceful experiences of my life.
Also, shoutout to the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise for having the fanciest hot chocolate I’ve ever sipped while watching the sun set over the mountains.
“Can’t get enough of those breathtaking landscapes? Dive into my unforgettable journey at Lake Louise—where turquoise waters meet towering peaks in one magical place!”
Moraine Lake: The Instagram Star That’s Even Better IRL
You’ve definitely seen photos of Moraine Lake—the surreal turquoise water surrounded by dramatic peaks known as the Valley of the Ten Peaks. What they don’t tell you is that photos still don’t do it justice. When I finally saw it with my own eyes, I just stood there whispering, “no way” under my breath for about five minutes.

If you’re going at sunrise, bundle up and get there early—it gets crowded fast. But watching the sun hit those peaks and light up the lake like a neon sign from nature? Worth every chilly second.
Fun fact: Due to limited parking and environmental conservation, access to Moraine Lake is now via shuttle, Roam bus, bike, or on foot. Plan ahead!
Sulphur Mountain: Views Worth the Squeaky Gondola Ride
If you want panoramic views without hiking six hours uphill (bless), take the Banff Gondola up Sulphur Mountain. At the top, I legit stood there for ten minutes just taking in the 360-degree views, jaw unhinged.

There’s a boardwalk that leads to a historic weather station, and it’s the perfect spot to feel like you’re on top of the world—because, well, you kind of are.
And if you’re into sunsets, do not miss golden hour up here. Just… trust me.
Wildlife Encounters: Nature’s Cameos
Driving around Banff is like flipping through a National Geographic magazine. One afternoon, I pulled over to watch a herd of elk just chilling in a meadow, completely unbothered by my existence. Another time, I spotted a black bear from a safe distance (don’t worry, I stayed in the car and didn’t try to become best friends with it).
If you’re lucky, and respectful, you might also spot bighorn sheep, moose, or even a wolf.
Just remember: no selfies with wildlife. It’s not cute, it’s dangerous.
Banff Upper Hot Springs: My Soak of Enlightenment
After a long day of hiking, nothing hits quite like a soak in the Banff Upper Hot Springs. Picture this: You’re sitting in warm, mineral-rich water with snow-dusted mountains in the distance, steam curling around you like some kind of alpine spa dream.
It’s open year-round and, yes, it can get crowded, but it’s totally worth elbowing your way into a spot with a view.
Strolling Through Banff Downtown: Small, Cozy, and Absolutely Charming
Let’s talk about Banff Downtown, because this place is straight out of a storybook. Picture a small, cozy town nestled between snowcapped peaks, with charming storefronts and chalet-style architecture that feels like a little slice of Europe in the Rockies.

Walking through the downtown is honestly one of the best things you can do, it’s peaceful, pretty, and packed with personality. There are loads of cute cafes, dessert shops (the ice cream here deserves its own pilgrimage), artisan chocolate stores, souvenir boutiques, and galleries. Whether you’re window-shopping, people-watching, or grabbing a cone of maple ice cream to stroll with, Downtown Banff turns a simple walk into a magical memory.
Bow Falls: A Rushing Beauty Just Minutes from Town

Just a short stroll from Banff town, Bow Falls is one of those spots that doesn’t always make the big lists, but totally should. It’s a wide, cascading waterfall surrounded by rugged cliffs and pine forest, and you can get super close to the water. I spent a quiet afternoon here just soaking in the sound of the rushing river. It’s especially pretty at sunrise or in early fall when the leaves start to turn.

Where to Stay: Cozy Cabins, Luxe Lodges & Campsite Dreams
Banff offers a wide range of accommodation to fit every type of traveler, from bougie resort lovers to rugged RV campers.

Luxury Lovers: If you’re going all-in, the Fairmont Banff Springs is basically a castle in the mountains. Seriously, it looks like Hogwarts. And the spa? Don’t even get me started.
Mid-Range Magic: I stayed at the Banff Aspen Lodge, and it hit that sweet spot between comfort and value. Comfy beds, a solid breakfast, and it’s just a few minutes’ walk to downtown.
Budget-Friendly: Hostels like HI Banff Alpine Centre are great for meeting fellow adventurers and saving some loonies (that’s Canadian for dollars, FYI).
Summer Camp Vibes: If you’re road-tripping in an RV or have your own tent, staying at one of Banff’s campgrounds during summer is a vibe. Sites like Tunnel Mountain or Two Jack Lakeside offer incredible views, but you’ll need to book your campsite way in advance, they fill up fast.
Waking up to birdsong and brewing coffee with mountain views? Chef’s kiss.
Food & Local Culture: Yes, I Ate My Weight in Poutine
Let’s talk about food, because adventure works up an appetite and Banff delivers.
The Maple Game Is Strong
You can’t go to Canada and not indulge in maple-everything. I’m talking maple bacon, maple cookies, even maple-glazed salmon. The sweetness of the syrup paired with the smoky flavors? Chef’s kiss.
Poutine: The National Comfort Food
There’s nothing like a plate of hot, gravy-soaked poutine after a day in the cold. One local spot, Tooloulou’s, became my go-to. Cajun meets Canadian? I didn’t know I needed that fusion in my life, but here we are.
Cozy Cafés & Mountain Brews
If you’re a coffee addict like me, check out Whitebark Café for strong brews and flaky pastries. And don’t skip Banff Ave Brewing Co.—their craft beer selection is top-notch, and the patio views are hard to beat.
Culture-wise, Banff has this lovely blend of rugged outdoorsy spirit and small-town charm. I met artists selling mountain-inspired prints, chatted with locals about avalanche season, and even stumbled into a photography exhibit at the Whyte Museum.
Anything and Everything
And when it comes to food? You’ll be spoiled for choice. Banff Downtown has nearly every kind of cuisine you can imagine—from Canadian staples and comfort food to authentic Indian curries, Mexican tacos, Chinese stir-fry, Japanese sushi, and more. Whether you’re in the mood for fast food from a familiar franchise or craving something international, you’ll find it here.

Hidden Gems: The Magic You Don’t Find on Postcards
Johnston Canyon Ice Walk

Everyone talks about it in summer, but the real magic? Winter. You strap on ice cleats and hike through a frozen wonderland of icy waterfalls and silent forests. It felt like walking through a fantasy novel.
Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary (About an hour from Banff)
Okay, this isn’t technically in Banff, but if you love dogs or wolves (or, like me, both), you have to visit. It’s a rescue and education center where you can learn about and meet real wolfdogs. Some of them even come say hi if they like your vibe.
Stargazing at Lake Minnewanka

Far enough from the town’s lights, Lake Minnewanka is perfect for stargazing. I wrapped myself in a blanket, lay on the frozen lake, and watched the Milky Way stretch across the sky. No words. Just chills, literal and metaphorical.
Tips for Travelers: Things I Wish I Knew Beforehand
- Best Time to Visit? June–September for hiking and canoeing, December–March for snow sports and ice magic. I went in February, and it was winter-wonderland perfection. I fell in love with it and then I kept on visiting again and again. I really feel i am lucky as i just stay an hour away from Banff.
- Budget Tips: The Banff townsite can be pricey. Save by booking accommodation in Canmore (20 minutes away), packing snacks, and grabbing a Parks Canada pass online ahead of time.
- Getting Around: A car gives you freedom, but there are shuttles to most major sights in peak season. Winter driving can be spicy, so go for AWD if you’re renting.
- Stay Safe: Layers are your friend. Weather changes fast. And yes, there are bears, so brush up on wildlife etiquette. No feeding. No chasing. No cuddles.
- Pack Smart: Reusable water bottle, layers, SPF (even in winter), and a good pair of hiking boots. Also? Chapstick. Your lips will thank you.
Final Thoughts: Banff, You’ve Ruined Me (In the Best Way)
Banff wasn’t just another travel destination for me, it was a soul reset and yes it’s worth the hype.
There’s something about being surrounded by nature so massive and majestic that it makes your daily worries feel small. Whether it was the silence of the snow-covered forests, the kindness of strangers I met along the way, or the simple joy of sipping hot cocoa with frozen eyelashes, Banff reminded me how good it feels to slow down and just be.
If you’ve ever felt stuck, burned out, or just in need of something real—something that cracks your heart open in the best way, go to Banff. Go fall into a snowbank. Go paddle across a glacier-fed lake. Go breathe that clean, crisp mountain air.
You won’t regret it.
